Abstract
A process of producing a low carbon ferro-chrome or ferro-manganese comprises smelting an ore of chromium or manganese with carbonaceous material in a shaft furnace into which is injected an oxygen-rich fluid, transferring the smelted alloy to a separate refining vessel and blowing into it an oxygen-rich fluid to reduce its carbon content. The fluid injected into the furnace may be preheated and may contain at least 50 per cent of oxygen. The fluid blown into the metal in the refining vessel may contain between 85 and 98 per cent of oxygen. The height of the shaft furnace may be less than normal to an extent determined by the oxygen content of the injected fluid and its degree of pre-heat. In the refining vessel, which may be an electric furnace, the reduction of carbon content may be accompanied by a simultaneous reduction of chromium content, where a chromium ore is reduced, to such an extent as to result in a stainless steel. Stainless steel may also be produced by addition of low carbon steel base to the low carbon ferro-chrome in the refining vessel. Such addition may be made in a second refining vessel and the resulting alloy may be further blown to produce stainless stell. The Specification refers to the addition of other metals to the stainless steel, e.g. nickel, titanium, niobium and molybdenum.
