Abstract

For the production of metallic titanium of high purity (see Group II] titanium tetrachloride is produced by reacting gaseous iodine at an elevated temperature above the b.p. of the tetraiodide (379 DEG C) with titanium bearing metal product and either fractionally cooling, or fractionally distilling to obtain a pure product. Distillation should be carried out between the temperatures 150 DEG C to 379 DEG C. Specifications 662,577, 662,579, 698,232, [Group II], 698,233, 698,234 and 698,236 are referred to.ALSO:Pure titanium is produced by passing a preformed gaseous product consisting essentially of titanium tetraiodide in contact with a heated surface maintained at a temperature in the range 1100 DEG C to 1700 DEG C at a pressure not higher than 30 m.m. of mercury. The titanium tetraoidide is purified by fractional distillation or condensations. Specifications 662,577, 662,579, [both in Group III], 698,232, 698,233, 698,234 and 698,236 are referred to.
