Abstract
A process for the production of an alkali metal other than lithium, or of an alloy of such a metal with another alkali metal, which comprises reacting a compound of the said metal with another alkali metal which has a boiling point higher than that of the said metal, such reaction being effected with the reactants molten and at a temperature between the boiling points of the said metals, and subjecting the resultant alkali metal vapours to fractional condensation. The reaction and fractionation are preferably carried out at substantially atmospheric pressure. Potassium or alloys thereof and caesium or alloys thereof may be made by reacting compounds of these metals with an alkali metal of higher boiling point, for example sodium. Potassium may be made by heating sodium with a molten potassium compound, for example the hydroxide or chloride, within the temperature range 760 DEG C.-880 DEG C. at substantially atmospheric pressure, passing the resultant vapours through a distilling column into contact with a cooling zone at the top of the column, to cause partial condensation, refluxing the condensate therefrom in such a manner as to cause intimate contact thereof with the ascending metal vapours, and condensing and collecting the vapours remaining from the said partial condensation. The temperature of the cooling zone should be regulated to be between 760 DEG C. and 780 DEG C.
