UNITED STAT S PATENT OFFICE.
GEORG MERLING AND HUGO KiJ HLER, 0F ELBERFELD, GERMANY, ASSIGNORS T0 FARIBENFABRIKEN VORM. FRIEDR. BAYER & 00.,
CORPORATION OF GERMANY.
OF ELBERFELD, GERMANY, A
EROCESS OF PRODUCING ISOPRENE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed February 18, 1911. Serial No. 609,444.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, GEORG MERLING and HUoo KoHLnn, doctors of philosophy, chemists, citizens of the German Empire, residing at Elberfeld, Germany, have invented new and useful Improvements in New Process'es of Producing Isoprene, of which the following'is a specification.
We have found that isopropenylmethy1-- chlorid, anhydrous oxalic acid, etc. The isopropenylmethylcarbinol can be obtained by' heating the ammonium base obtained from 3-methyl-2-oxy-butyldimethylamin:
In order to illustrate the new process more fully the following examples are given, the parts being by weight:
Example 1: 1 part of isopropenylmethylcarbinol is heated with 10 part-s of anhydrous oxalic acid in an oil bath to 130150 (1., the isoprene is then condensed in a cooled tube and purified by a fractional distillation.
Example 2: Isopropenylmethylcarbinol is conducted into a porcelain tube which is Patented May 21, 1912,
heated to 130 to 150 C. and which is filled with potassium bisulfate or with native aluminium sesquioxid. The isoprene thus obtained is then condensed and purified as described in Example 1.
We claim t 1. The herein described process for producing isoprene, whichprocess consists in treating isopropenylmethylcarbinol with a dehydrating agent, substantially as described.
2. The herein described process forproducing isoprene, which process consists in treating isopropenylmethylcarbinol with oxalic acid, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof we have hereunto set our hands in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
GEORG MERLING. [L. s.] HUGO KGHLER. [L. s.]
