Abstract
Fluorinated derivatives of methane are prepared by reacting a derivative of methane substituted only by halogen, other than fluorine, with substantially anhydrous hydrogen fluoride in the absence of a catalyst and at elevated temperature and pressure. In the example, carbon tetrachloride and anhydrous hydrogen fluoride are charged into a pressure vessel bearing a water-cooled reflux condenser surmounted by a pressure release valve. The mixture is heated under controlled pressure, the released gases being scrubbed and then condensed. After cooling, the excess pressure is released and the reaction product distilled to give monofluoro-trichloromethane. Using other reactants the reflux condenser may be cooled by refrigerated brine.
