Abstract

Hydrogen fluoride is reacted with acetylene in the presence of mercuric compounds and/or active carbon. Mercuric oxide, chloride or fluoride may be supported on carriers, for example activated charcoal. The hydrogen fluoride may be anhydrous or in the form of an aqueous solution. The reaction products are mainly vinyl fluoride or difluorethanes, chiefly ethylidene fluoride, and can be separated by fractional distillation. A mixture of gaseous hydrogen fluoride and acetylene may be passed over the catalyst, such as the product obtained by mixing granulated activated charcoal with a suspension of mercuric oxide and drying, in an iron vessel. The reaction heat raises the temperature, for example to 20--40 DEG C., which can be regulated by varying the quantity and composition of the circulating gases, or by adding indifferent gases. Elevated temperatures can, however, be used to start the reaction. Part of the gases leaving the catalyst may be removed and the fluorohydrocarbons separated, or the latter may be removed directly with suitable solvents. The products are suitable as refrigerants and for the manufacture of polymerization products.
