Abstract
Fluorinated derivatives of aliphatic hydrocarbons are prepared by reacting a halogenated derivative of an aliphatic hydrocarbon, containing in the molecule two or more carbon atoms and at least four atoms of halogen other than fluorine of which three are attached to one carbon atom, and containing no other substituents, with substantially anhydrous hydrogen fluoride in the absence of a catalyst and at elevated temperature and pressure. In the examples, asym-tetrachloroethane, pentachloroethane and hexachloropropylene are separately heated with hydrogen fluoride in pressure vessels bearing a water cooled reflux condenser surmounted by a controllable pressure release valve. The vessels are cooled, the pressure released and the contents distilled giving respectively, 1-fluoro-1,1,2,-tri-chloroethane; 1-fluoro-1,1,2,2-tetrachloroethane and in the last case fractions consisting of 1,1,1-trifluoro-2,3,3-trichloropropene-2, 1,1-difluoro-1,2, 3,3-tetrachloropropene-2; and 1-fluoro-1,1,2, 3,3-pentachloropropene-2. Using other reactants, the reflux condenser may be cooled with refrigerated brine. The gaseous products which are obtained are passed through absorbents and then condensed.
