Abstract
Chlorosuccinic acid dichlorides containing four to six chlorine atoms in the molecule are made by reacting acetyl chloride, monochloracetyl chloride or dichloracetyl chloride or a mixture of two or more of these chlorides in the liquid or gaseous phase with elementary chlorine under the action of ultra violet light. An inert solvent, such as a halogenated aliphatic hydrocarbon or nitrobenzene, may be present. The reaction will take place at room temperature but temperatures of 50 DEG to 400 DEG C. are advantageous. The degree of chlorination of the product depends on the proportion of chlorine used and on the temperature. Tetrachlorosuccinic acid dichloride is the preferred product, but dichlorosuccinic acid dichloride may also be obtained.
