Abstract

p-Monochloromethyl-benzoic is prepared by chlorinating p-toluic acid in suspension in a reaction medium under the influence of light. The chlorination is preferably carried out by suspending the toluic acid in 3-4 parts of an organic compound liquid at the chlorination temperature, such as chlorobenzene or methyl toluate, and passing in chlorine at a temperature of 85 DEG C.-95 DEG C. Examples are given.
