Abstract

A water-soluble carboxylic acid is separated from a mixture of butadiene monoxide and the carboxylic acid by forming a solution of the butadiene monoxide, the carboxylic acid and an inert water-immiscible organic solvent and washing the solution with water. Preferably the solution is washed with an aqueous solution of an alkali metal salt such as a halide or sulphate. The treatment is preferably effected at a temperature below 25 DEG C. Useful solvents are the chlorinated hydrocarbons, diethyl ether, benzene and toluene. In an example, butadiene is reacted with peracetic acid in ethylene dichloride and the solution is washed with sodium sulphate solution to remove evolved acetic acid from the butadiene monoxide produced.
