Abstract
A process for the manufacture of organic fluorine compounds comprises reacting chlorine monofluoride with an unsaturated hydrocarbon wherein all the hydrogen has been substituted by halogen (none or not all of which is fluorine). The unsaturated hydrocarbons specified are hexachlorobutadiene, hexachlorobenzene, octachloronaphthalene and decachlorodiphenyl. Solid halogenated unsaturated hydrocarbons, such as octachloronaphthalene, are reacted with chlorine monofluoride when suspended in a halogenated material made by the reaction of chlorine trifluoride with a halogenated aromatic hydrocarbon according to the process of the parent Specification or in a halogenated material produced by a previous reaction of chlorine monofluoride with the same or different halogenated aromatic hydrocarbon, or in a mixture of these two materials. The temperature for this reaction is 100 DEG to 180 DEG C. Other solid reactants are hexachlorobenzene and decachlorodiphenyl. A mixture of octachloronaphthalene, hexachlorobenzene and decachlorodiphenyl may be reacted with chlorine monofluoride. With a liquid reactant such as hexachlorobutadiene, chlorine monofluoride may be passed directly into the reactant. The reaction temperature is 90 DEG to 115 DEG C.ALSO:Chlorine monofluoride is prepared by reacting equal volumes of chlorine trifluoride and chlorine at a temperature of 325 DEG to 370 DEG C.
