Abstract
A process for the manufacture of fluorinecontaining organic compounds comprises reacting chlorine monofluoride with an organic compound containing hydrogen at least part of which is directly attached to carbon in the presence of an organic solvent containing fluorine or fluorine and chlorine substituents inert to the reactants and reaction products. The starting material may be a hydrocarbon or halogenated hydrocarbon containing hydrogen, such as n-heptane, trimethylpentane, a paraffin oil, naphthalene, decalin, chlorinated paraffin wax, chlorinated naphthalene, and chlorinated rubber. The solvent may be perfluoromethylcyclohexane or a halogenated material obtained by reacting chlorine monofluoride or trifluoride with an organic compound containing hydrogen. The chlorine monofluoride may be diluted with an inert gas such as nitrogen. The reaction product may be further reacted with chlorine monofluoride or trifluoride at an elevated temperature up to 160 DEG C. In examples: (1) chlorofluorinated paraffin wax dissolved in chlorofluorobutanes is further fluorinated with chlorine monofluoride, and (2) chlorinated paraffin wax is first fluorinated with the product of Example (1) as solvent and then with chlorofluorobutanes as solvent.
