Abstract

Fluorinated derivatives of aliphatic hydrocarbons are prepared by reacting a halogenated derivative of an aliphatic hydrocarbon, containing halogen other than fluorine, with a substantially anhydrous mixture of hydrogen fluoride and potassium fluoride, the former being present in an amount equivalent to the fluorine it is desired to introduce. In the example, carbon tetrachloride and a potassium fluoride-hydrogen fluoride complex are heated in an autoclave provided with a water-cooled condenser surmounted by a pressure release valve which is adjusted to maintain constant pressure. The escaping gases are scrubbed with water and caustic soda solution and then condensed in a trap. When reaction is complete, the contents of the autoclave and trap are distilled, yielding monofluorotrichloromethane. To the solid residue in the autoclave are added carbon tetrachloride and anhydrous hydrogen fluoride and the reaction repeated. Specifications 576,189 and 576,190 are referred to.
