Abstract

In the production of vinyl chloride the by-products of the dehydrochlorination of ethylene dichloride (for instance as described in Specification 573,532) are partially, but not completely, freed from saturated organic chlorine compounds so as to reduce the content thereof to less than 15 per cent by volume of the gaseous product, and the partially purified hydrogen chloride so obtained is reacted with acetylene to produce more vinyl chloride. The partial purification of the hydrogen chloride p may be effected by cooling or by washing with a solvent such as vinyl chloride, toluene, xylene, and chlorinated hydrocarbons boiling up to about 150 DEG C. including ethylene dichloride. Detailed examples are given.
