Abstract
Trans-dichlorethylene and ethylene dichloride are produced by reacting a mixture of acetylene and ethylene with chlorine in the vapour phase and in the presence of a chlorination catalyst comprising ferric or antimony chloride or activated carbon, condensing the reaction products, and fractionally distilling to separate the two chlorides. The hydrocarbon feed may be obtained by cracking a paraffinic stock such as ethane, propane or fractions boiling up to naphtha or above at about 1100-1600 DEG C. Conditions are preferably chosen to yield acetylene and ethylene in about equimolar amounts, these being separated from other reaction products. The chlorination may be effected at temperatures up to about 350 DEG C., the chlorine to total gas charge ratio suitably being about 1 to 8-10. The metal halide catalysts may be used as such or on carriers.
