Abstract

In the thermal chlorination of aliphatic hydrocarbons with chlorine, the products are quenched in liquid aqueous hydrochloric acid of at least 19 per cent hydrogen chloride. In examples, a mixture of methane and chlorine containing perchloroethylene, carbon tetrachloride and HCl is passed through a reactor and the product cooled in a stream of 21-36 per cent aqueous HCl, and the lower organic layer fractionated. CCl4 may be separated and pure perchloroethylene recovered; ethane and propane mixtures with chlorine are similarly treated, the products being mainly perchloroethylene; other hydrocarbons which may be used are butane, butene, propylene, ethylene and acetylene. Hydrogen chloride is also recovered from the concentrated aqueous layer.ALSO:In the chlorination of aliphatic hydrocarbons with chlorine, (see Group IV(b)), the products including hydrogen chloride, are quenched in liquid aqueous hydrochloric acid of at least 19 per cent hydrogen chloride. The upper aqueous layer obtained is fractionated to give a concentrated aqueous hydrochloric acid from which anhydrous hydrogen chloride may be obtained by known methods.
