Abstract

Straight chain olefins are obtained by dehydrochlorination of a chlorinated normal paraffin obtained by chlorinating a feedstock melting below 25 DEG C. and comprising C4-C20 normal paraffins and effecting dehydrochlorination at elevated temperature, e.g. 200-500 DEG C., in the presence of a diatomaceous earth. The preferred catalyst is "Celite" (Registered Trade Mark). The feed may be in the liquid or, preferably, vapour phase and may contain a diluent such as nitrogen, a lower paraffin or unchlorinated paraffin. The paraffin may be chlorinated only to a low degree, e.g. less than 40% by wt. combined chlorine. The olefins may be separated from any unconverted paraffin or the mixture may be used as such e.g. for alkylating benzene or forming alcohols.
