Abstract
1323038 Chlorohydrocarbon purification SOLVAY ET CIE 19 April 1971 [20 Feb 1970] 22211/71 Heading C2C The crude gaseous product resulting from the pyrolysis of 1,2-dichloroethane to vinyl chloride is cooled under superatmospheric pressure to give a gaseous phase and a liquid phase, the liquid phase is treated with 0À01 to 5% wt. of chlorine with respect to the weight of undecomposed 1,2-dichloroethane, and vinyl chloride and 1,2-dichloroethane are then separated from the mixture. Cooling may be effected in two stages, the first including contact with liquid 1,2- dichloroethane. A chlorination catalyst, e.g. ferric chloride, may be used. Part of the chlorine-treated liquid phase may be used to wash the gaseous phase, the wash liquid then being re-chlorinated. The chlorinated mixture may be separated into its constituents by successive distillations. 1,2-Dichloroethane may be recycled to the pyrolysis step.
