Abstract

Vinyl chloride obtained by the pyrolysis of dichlorethane is purified by passing it in the vapour phase in admixture with hydrogen chloride over a hydrochlorination catalyst. Preferably, the mixture of vinyl chloride and hydrogen chloride obtained in the pyrolysis is separated from the major part of unconverted dichlorethane by condensing out the latter. Suitable catalysts are those used for the synthesis of vinyl chloride from acetylene and hydrogen chloride, e.g. metallic chlorides deposited on porous supports such as mercuric chloride or active carbon, silica or alumina gel.
