Abstract
The content of an acetylene in a hydrocarbon mixed consisting predominantly of an olefine is reduced by passing in the vapour phase with a hydrogen-containing gas over elemental nickel supported on sepiolite. The hydrogen may be pure or a tail gas from a hydrocarbon conversion process and is added to give a blend containing 0,5-5 mol. per cent of hydrogen. Suitable conditions are 0-200 DEG C., 0-1000 p.s.i.g. and above 1000 vol./vol./hr. The olefine preferably contains less than 5 carbon atoms, e.g. ethylene. The Provisional Specification also refers to the use as support for the nickel catalyst, of alumina, chromia, calcium, barium, strontium or magnesium oxide or carbonate, diatomaceous earth, firebrick, silicon carbide, quartz, carbon or pumice. This subject-matter does not appear in the Complete Specification. Specifications 646,408 and 800,320 are referred to.
