Abstract

Hydrocarbons in the gasoline boiling point range and containing undesired unsaturated hydrocarbons are hydrogenated in two stages. In the first stage the hydrocarbon is trickled in the liquid phase over a noble metal of Group VIII of the Periodic Table supported on a macroporous support, having an intrinsic surface of less than 100 m.2/g. and a water absorption capacity of at least 10% by weight, at a temperature below 100 DEG C., and then trickling in the liquid phase over a noble metal of Group VIII at 125 DEG C. to 250 DEG C. The metal in the second stage may be on a carrier having an intimate surface above 50 m.2/g. The catalysts may be treated with sulphur-containing gases and then with hydrogen before they are used. The metal is preferably palladium, and the hydrocarbon is preferably free from hydrogen sulphide and readily decomposable organic sulphur compounds. Preferred carriers are:-alumina, alumina-silica, alumina-chromia, low-silica bauxites, preferably thermally treated, magnesia, baria, calcium oxide, alkaline-earth metal carbonates, titania, zirconia or thoria. Specifications 916,683 and 927,631 are referred to.
