Abstract
The pour point of oils boiling between 150 DEG and 450 DEG C. is lowered by contact with hydrogen and a catalyst comprising molybdena with or without cobalt oxide supported on silica-alumina containing 5-14% of silica based on the total catalyst at a temperature of at least 400 DEG C. but below that at which more than 20% by weight of the feed is converted to material boiling below 150 DEG C., a pressure of at least 100 p.s.i.g. and a space velocity of not more than 3 v./v./hr., the temperature and space velocity being correlated to lower the pour point by at least 5 DEG C. The temperature may be 400 DEG -480 DEG C., the pressure 100-1500 p.s.i.g. and the hydrogen to hydrocarbon mol. ratio 5-20:1, with an overall consumption of hydrogen. The feed may be desulphurized prior to treatment or desulphurization may be effected simultaneously. Low boiling material formed may be removed by fractionation, e.g. cutting at 130 DEG -170 DEG C.
