Abstract

A crude petroleum oil is hydrogenated by causing it to flow upwardly in the reaction zone countercurrently and in contact with a down-flowing solid hydrogenation catalyst in the form of beads of size 1/8 -\ba1/16 inch, feeding a hydrogen-containing gas to the reaction zone, maintaining a temperature, pressure and oil residence time sufficient to cause the desired hydrocracking reaction and recovering from an upper point in said reaction zone hydrocracked products, continuously withdrawing catalyst contaminated with carbonaceous and other deactivating deposits from a lower point in the reaction zone, charging the withdrawn catalyst into a stream of an oxygen-containing gas in which deactivating deposits are burned from the catalyst while the latter is maintained as a confined stream and returning the regenerated catalyst to an upper point in the reaction zone for re-use. The catalyst may be cobalt molybdate, nickel, platinum or nickel-sulphidetungsten sulphide, all on alumina, may be used. In a preferred embodiment, a bachaquero crude oil was treated at 850 DEG F., 800 p.s.i.g., a space velocity of 0.5 v/hour/v., and a hydrogen feed of 3000 S.C.F/barrel. The product consists of a lower boiling oil 45% of which boils at 650-1000 DEG F. and of a reduced sulphur content. The catalyst may be regenerated at 975-1100 DEG F. at a pressure of 100-1000 p.s.i.g. and with a residence time in the generator of 1-30 seconds.
