Abstract

Crude petroleum is hydrofined in the liquid phase by contacting a mixture of hydrogen and the crude oil with a catalyst selected from the oxides and sulphides of chromium, molybdenum, tungsten, iron, cobalt and nickel at 300 DEG -395 DEG C. and a pressure of 55 - 120 kg./cm2. Best results are obtained by employing the higher pressures in the quoted range with the lower temperatures. The mixture to be treated most suitably comprises a saturated solution of hydrogen in the crude petroleum, and the catalyst may be mounted in a fixed bed or suspended in the oil. The catalyst, which is preferably a mixture and/or compound of the oxides of molybdenum and cobalt, may be supported on silica, magnesium oxide, kieselguhr, activated carbon, or, most suitably, alumina, usually has a grain size of 0,1 - 10 mm., preferably 1 - 5 mm., when used in a fixed bed and a grain size of 0,05 - 0,5 mm. when used in solution.
