Abstract

Crude petroleum is desulphurized by contacting it in admixture with hydrogen with a catalyst consisting of the oxides of cobalt and molybdenum deposited on or incorporated with a support, at a temperature of 750-850 DEG F. and a pressure of 500-1,500lb./sq. in., separating hydrogen and hydrogen sulphide from the treated crude and recycling the hydrogen to the reaction zone. The catalyst may be in the form of cobalt molybdate and be supported on alumina.
