Abstract
Catalysts for the purification at about 250-350 DEG C. of gases obtained by carbonizing coal comprise for a first treatment a hydrogenation catalyst active in the presence of sulphur compounds, suitably sulphides of nickel or molybdenum, and then a catalyst comprising chromium or an oxide or sulphide of chromium with which copper or an oxide or sulphide may be included on a support of active carbon or activated alumina, a quantity of steam amounting to at least 10 per cent by volume of the mixture being present for the second treatment.
