Abstract
Sulphur and nitrogen are removed from hydrocarbon oils by passing in presence of hydrogen, over a catalyst containing at least one of Mo, W and Cr and at least one of Fe, Ni and Co, and a silica-alumina carrier containing at least 40 wt. per cent silica, which catalyst has been activated or reactivated for at least two hours at 525 DEG -700 DEG C. in an atmosphere containing not more than 5 mol. per cent water vapour. In example a catalyst comprising Co and Mo oxides on silica-alumina was used to process a Middle East straight-run gas oil, B.R. 230 DEG -380 DEG C., containing sulphur and nitrogen, under the following conditions: 375 DEG C., 35 atm.; 2 kg./l./h S.V. and a hydrogen: oil ratio of 2000 l. (N.T.P.)/kg. Specification 753,934 is referred to.
