Abstract

563,350. Extracting sulphur compounds from coal gas. GAS RESEARCH BOARD, and KEY, A. Nov. 24, 1942, No. 16658. [Class 55 (ii)] In the extraction of sulphur compounds from coal gas after removal of most of the hydrogen sulphide, which includes the conversion of organic sulphur into hydrogen sulphide, the catalyst used for this conversion is poisoned by certain hydrocarbons containing triple bonds, especially acetylene, and these hydrocarbons are converted by subjecting the gases at a temperature of 250‹-350‹ C. to a hydrogena. tion catalyst, such as a sulphide of molybdenum or nickel, into olefinic or saturated hydrocarbons. The gas may be then treated by the process of Specification 561,679 in which it is subjected to a treatment by chromium or an oxide or sulphide of chromium alone or mixed with copper or an oxide or sulphide of copper to convert organic sulphur compounds into hydrogen sulphide. Alternatively, this latter treatment may be replaced by one including heating of the gas to 250‹ to 350‹ C. and subjecting the gas to a substance such as oxide of iron or copper which not only converts organic sulphur compounds into hydrogen sulphide but also removes the hydrogen sulphide. In another modification, as it is found that the hydrogenation catalyst is capable of converting organic sulphur compounds into hydrogen sulphide to a considerable degree, the subsequent treatment may be omitted. The nickel sulphide catalyst may be prepared by impregnating a porous support of silica or alumina with a nickel salt in solution, heating the mass to form the oxide which is then heated in hydrogen to yield metallic nickel which is treated with hydrogen sulphide.
