Abstract
In purifying benzene by treating it with hydrogen at elevated temperature and pressure in the presence of catalysts which accelerate action of the hydrogen on impurities in the benzene, the hydrogen gas also contains polymerizable impurities, such gas and the crude benzene being treated in the vapour phase, without evaporation of benzene, to convert polymerizable substances in the benzene and in the gas to benzene-soluble substances of higher boiling point which remain on subsequently evaporating off the benzene and its homologues. The gases are exemplified by coke oven gas, town gas, gas obtained by low-temperature carbonization, producer gas, cracking gas, carburetted water gas, residual gases from hydrogenations or hydrocarbon syntheses. The catalysts are exemplified by oxides and sulphides of elements of Groups V, VI and VIII of the Periodic Classification, e.g. mixtures of the oxides or sulphides of molybdenum or tungsten with oxides or sulphides of cobalt or nickel, the catalyst being preferably on a carrier such as activated alumina or a zinc, magnesium or thorium oxide or silicate. A temperature of 200 DEG C. and a pressure of 30-100, preferably 50, atmospheres may be employed.
