Abstract

Hydrocarbon oils boiling above 300 DEG C are desulphurized by treatment with a gas containing free hydrogen at a temperature above 200 DEG C and under a pressure of at least 10 atmospheres in the presence of a stationary catalyst, by letting the oils flow in a thin layer over the catalyst in a reaction space through which the gas containing free hydrogen is passed as a single continuous phase, the quantity of hydrogen discharged from the reaction space (calculated at normal temperature and pressure) being at most 500 litres, but preferably more than 50 litres, per kgm. of initial material. The gas may be pure hydrogen or hydrogen mixed with other gases, such as hydrocarbons, nitrogen and carbon oxides. A temperature of 250 DEG -450 DEG C may be used. In an example, a fraction obtained from crude oil by flash distillation (calculated boiling point 300-500 DEG C), is caused to flow as a thin film over a cobalt molybdate catalyst supported on alumina at a temperature of 370 DEG C and a pressure of 50 atms.; 250 litres of gas (measured after removal of hydrogen sulphide) per kgm. of oil supplied is discharged at the bottom of the reactor. The treated oil may be thermally or catalytically cracked, or destructively hydrogenated.
