Abstract

Gas oil or a higher-boiling petroleum feedstock is passed with hydrogen over a sulphurresistant hydrogenation catalyst at elevated temperature and pressure in order to convert the sulphur contained in the oil into hydrogen sulphide, which is then separated, the desulphurized oil is cracked in the presence of a montmorillonite clay which has been heated to <PICT:0632193/III/1> remove at least some of the combined hydroxyl groups therefrom, a gas rich in hydrogen is separated from the cracked products and this gas is passed to the desulphurization zone and constitutes the sole source of hydrogen required for the process. An Iranian crude oil distillate (20 per cent by volume of which distils below 770 DEG F.), containing 1.5 per cent sulphur, was passed, together with compressed gas containing 67.1 mol. per cent of hydrogen from holder A, through heat exchanger B and preheater C into reactor D, which contained a catalyst comprising cobalt molybdate deposited on activated alumina maintained at 750 DEG F. under a gauge pressure of 1000 lbs. per square inch. The products from reactor D were passed to separator E, maintained at approximately 38 lbs. per square inch pressure and 550 DEG F., where a separation into liquid and gas occurred. The liquid was free from dissolved H2S and contained 0.12 per cent of combined sulphur. This liquid was passed through heat exchanger P, vaporized in vaporizer H and cracked in reactor G, using a treated montmorillonite clay (of the kind described in Specification 632,192), at 850 DEG F. The cracked products were cooled in heat exchanger P and in cooler J, and were then passed to separator K maintained at 60 DEG F. The liquid product was separated by distillation into gasoline, gas oil, and residue. The gaseous product was scrubbed in scrubber L for the recovery of butanes and pentanes, and then passed to holder A. The gas from separator E, which comprised unused hydrogen, H2S and light hydrocarbons, was cooled in cooler M, passed to a further separator N, where some hydrocarbons were removed, and then passed to scrubber O where H2S and further hydrocarbons were removed. The scrubbed gas was recirculated to holder A.
