Abstract
Petroleum hydrocarbons are desulphurized by contacting, in vapour phase and at elevated temperature and pressure, with a sulphur resistant hydrogenation catalyst in the presence of coke oven gas, and supplying fresh gas continuously to the reaction zone without recycle of the gas separated therefrom. The catalysts used are the oxides of cobalt and molybdenum, as such and/or in the form of cobalt molybdate, deposited on or incorporated with a support such as alumina. Temperatures of 650-850 DEG F. and pressures up to 1500 p.s.i. may be used. The example refers to the catalytic treatment of a gas oil with coke-oven gas containing 53 per cent hydrogen, at 780 DEG F., 500 p.s.i.g. pressure, a space velocity of 2 v.v./hr., and a gas feed rate of 2000 S.C.F./bbl. of oil. The Provisional Specification refers also to the use of gases containing 20-80 per cent of hydrogen, e.g. hydrocarbon gas obtained by scrubbing thermal cracker gases with naphtha to remove unsaturates.
