Abstract

A catalyst carrier is treated with hydrogen or gases supplying free hydrogen before it is provided with all of the catalytic substance. Specified carriers are (1) carbonaceous materials such as brown coal, coke, active carbon, wood charcoal, coal, and peat and (2) mineral substances such as bauxite, Florida earth, alumina, bentonite, active silica, burnt clay, and magnesite. The hydrogen treatment is preferably effected at temperatures of 300--350 DEG C. and pressures of at least 20 atmospheres. The catalytic substances may be metals of the 2nd to the 8th groups but particularly of the 6th group, or oxides, hydroxides, sulphides, carbonates, halides, or other compounds thereof, and the quantity used may be between 1 and 20 per cent by weight of the carrier. The catalysts prepared according to the invention are particularly applicable to the destructive hydrogenation of carbonaceous materials, the conversion of hydrocarbons such as middle oil, benzine, &c. into non-knocking motor fuels, the removal by hydrogenation of oxygen, sulphur, and nitrogen compounds from carbonaceous material, the conversion of oxygen and sulphur compounds such as phenols into hydrocarbons, and the hydrogenation of unsaturated and aromatic hydrocarbons.
