Abstract

476,684. Gas - purifying processes. GAS LIGHT AND COKE CO., GRIFFITH, R. H., and CRAWLEY, B. May 13, 1936, Nos. 13586 and 35450. [Class 55 (ii)] Industrial combustible gases containing free hydrogen and organic sulphur compounds are passed at a temperature above 100‹ C., and preferably below 200‹ C., over a catalyst prepared by reducing a non-nitrogenous oxygencontaining compound of cobalt or nickel, whereby diolefine hydrocarbons are converted into saturated hydrocarbons and free oxides of nitrogen partly or wholly removed. The catalyst may be formed from a paste of the finely ground oxide, hydroxide, or carbonate made into pellets or granules or deposited on a clay &c. support and heated in the presence of a reducing gas at about 300-550‹ C. The presence of organic sulphur compounds in the reducing gas or gas to be purified results in the conversion of the metal to catalytically active sulphide. The first Provisional Specification describes also the use of titanium, chromium, and iron as catalysts.
