Abstract
1376830 Treating coke-oven gas: sulphur: nitrogen CARL STILL 16 Feb 1972 [16 Feb 1971] 7163/72 Heading C1A Coke-oven gas is scrubbed to remove hydrogen sulphide, and scrubbed to remove ammonia, the ammonia being desorbed from the scrubbing solution and the H 2 S scrubbing solution being regenerated, the gaseous products of the regeneration step being used to combust or decompose the desorbed ammonia. The gaseous products of the combustion step may be mixed with the heating gases for the coke-oven battery or may be used as fuel in the flues of the cokeoven battery. The gaseous products of the regeneration may be used to desorb and decompose ammonia from the ammonia scrubbing solution or employed as combustion air in a sulphuric acid plant. The H 2 S scrub may precede or follow the NH 3 scrub, the preferred scrubbing solution comprising an aqueous solution of Na 2 CO 3 containing 9,10-anthraquinone-1,7-disulphonic acid as a catalyst. The spent absorbent may be oxidized by blowing in air thus producing sulphur, which may be filtered off from the aqueous carbonate solution. The regenerated carbonate may be recycled to the H 2 S scrubber. Water resulting from the distillation of coal to form coke may be used to absorb the ammonia.
