Abstract
319,396. Johnson, J. Y., (I. G. Farbenindustrie Akt.-Ges.). June 20, 1928. Materials for purifying.-Gases containing sulphuretted hydrogen and preferably ammonia, e.g. fuel gases, are purified by oxidation of the sulphuretted hydrogen to sulphur dioxide by passage over a catalyst comprising a heavy metal such as nickel, iron, cobalt, or copper, with an addition of up to 10 per cent of a second metal comprising lead, bismuth, copper or their compounds, or alkali metal, or alkaline earth metal salts. One or more oxygen transferring metals or metalloids of groups 4, 5 and 6 of the periodic table, e.g. chromium, vanadium, silicon, carbon, molybdenum may be added. The sulphur may be recovered as a sulphite-bisulphite mixture with an alkaline reagent, the ammonia in the gas being regulated accordingly. The catalyst is prepared by soaking carriers such as pumice stone, silica gel or burnt fireclay in a solution of the nitrates of the required metals and calcining, and is used at 100‹-700‹ C. or preferably 200‹- 400‹ C. at normal pressure at 10-1000 atmospheres. To counteract the deposition of carbon from hydrocarbons on the catalyst, the temperature of reaction may rise 5‹ C. every three days, or the catalyst be continuously replaced.
