Liquid or gaseous hydrocarbons containing organic sulphur compounds are converted into a gas containing methane, carbon monoxide and hydrogen by first passing the hydrocarbons, after vaporization in the case of liquid hydrocarbons, together with hydrogen or a hydrogencontaining gas and at an elevated temperature, e.g. between 400‹ and 500‹ C., over a catalyst which promotes the reaction of organic sulphur compounds with hydrogen to form hydrogen sulphide, and then passing the resulting mixture together with free oxygen or steam into a conversion zone at a higher temperature, e.g. between 780‹ and 1000‹ C., and preferably containing a dehydrogenation or a cracking and a reforming catalyst to produce the desired gas. Product gas may be recycled to provide all or some of the hydrogen for the first part of the process and in this case free carbon is removed from all or part of the product gas by passing it, if necessary together with additional free oxygen and/or steam, over an oxidation catalyst at a temperature between 900‹ and 1000‹ C. Liquid hydrocarbons may be vaporized in the presence of the hydrogen-containing gas to be used in the step for removing organic sulphur compounds. Catalysts suitable for promoting the reaction of organic sulphur compounds with hydrogen are oxidic, preferably non-hydrating, compounds of elements of the second, third and fourth groups of the Periodic Table. In the conversion zone suitable cracking catalysts are crystalline oxidic compounds of elements of the second, third and fourth groups of the Periodic Table and suitable reforming catalysts, i.e. catalysts which promote reaction between products from that part of the conversion zone containing the cracking catalyst and steam, are metals such as nickel, cobalt and chromium, oxides such as chromium oxide, cobalt oxide and tungstic oxide, sulphides such as nickel sulphide, molybdenum sulphide or an inert carrier, e.g. crystalline mixed compounds of alumina and silica or magnesia and silica. Oxidation catalysts for use in the removal of carbon from the product gas are oxidic compounds of metals of the sixth, seventh and eighth groups of the Periodic Table, particularly chromium oxide. The oxidation catalyst may be in the form of shaped bodies the surface of which contains about 5% of the catalyst.
