293,172. Johnson, J. Y., (I. G. Farben. industrie Akt.-Ges.). May 26, 1927. Materials for making gas. - Gases containing hydrogen are prepared by reaction at temperatures of about 1000‹ C. between sulphuretted hydrogen or gases containing sulphur, such as those obtained in the hydrogenation of sulphurbearing coal, oils, such as Panuco oil &c., and hydrocarbons, such as methane, natural gas, gases from cracking, distillation of coal, or destructive hydrogenation of coal, tar, oils, &c. The reaction may be carried out in presence of catalysts such as aluminium oxide, active charcoal, silica gel, pumice, or carborundum. The reaction may be effected by an electric arc, or by passage over carbon serving as an electric resistance or by passage through a producer previously heated with air or oxygen. Water gas may be produced by adding gases containing oxygen such as air, carbon dioxide &c. to the reaction mixture. The unchanged hydrocarbons may be treated to yield further hydrogen, by cracking or by partial combustion with air or oxygen or by treatment with water or carbon dioxide in presence of a catalyst such as nickel.
