Abstract

Carbonaceous materials, including crude benzenes and benzines, are treated at high temperature and pressure with hydrogen-containing gases obtained by the degasification of solid carbonaceous materials and from which the strongly unsaturated hydrocarbons, sulphur compounds, free oxygen and oxides of nitrogen have been removed. Suitable gases are coke-oven gas, illuminating gas, or the gases from low temperature carbonization of coal or distillation of oil shale. The undesired constituents, including iron carbonyl, may be removed by adsorbents such as active carbon, silica gel, fuller's earth, tonsil, clay, and the like; or by the action of sulphuric or dilute nitric acids, alkaline hypochlorite solution, or anhydrous aluminium chloride. The gases may also be led over hydrogenating catalysts of the 6th group, or over catalysts containing silver; or may be treated in a liquid carbonaceous medium with the catalysts described in Specification 257,256, [Class 32, Distilling &c.]. Carbon dioxide and monoxide may be removed by washing with water under pressure and with cuprous salts respectively. Specification 348,690 is also referred to.
