Abstract

Hydrocarbon mixtures containing unsaturated compounds, e.g benzines obtained by cracking are purified from sulphur and freed from unsaturated compounds containing two or more double bonds by treatment with hydrogen at temperatures below 300 DEG C. in presence of one or more of the sulphides of iron, zinc, manganese copper and tin. The reaction is preferably carried out at temperatures between 180 and 250 DEG C. and under pressures above 20 atmospheres. A strongly unsaturated benzine obtained by cracking which while having a good octaine number produces strong resinification when used in a motor, is passed at 200 DEG C. and 200 atmospheres pressure with hydrogen over precipitated iron sulphide as catalyst. The product while still unsaturated and having the same octane number is free from resinifying constituents. Hydrogenating gases comprising hydrogen mixed with nitrogen, water gas, carbon dioxide, sulphuretted hydrogen water vapour or methane may be used.
