Abstract
331,916. Johnson, J. Y., (I. G. Farbenindustrie Akt.-Ges.). April 11, 1929. Hydrogenation, destructive.-The products of destructive hydrogenation, leaving the reaction vessel in the gaseous form, are washed and the vapours simultaneously condensed by contacting them, while still under pressure, with a washing oil e.g. hydrocarbon oils of high boiling point, destructive hydrogenation products and the like. A middle oil obtained by fractional distillation from a brown coal low temperature distillation tar and containing 2 per cent of sulphur is treated with hydrogen at 450-470‹ C. and 200 atmospheres pressure in the presence of a catalyst prepared from molybdic acid and zinc oxide. A washing oil boiling at 200‹ C., e.g. an oil obtained by the same process, is sprayed into the gaseous mixture leaving the reaction vessel and the mixture cooled in a condenser. A condensate is obtained comprising the washing oil and the condensible products of the reaction in which most of the hydrogen sulphide and gaseous hydrocarbons produced in the reaction are dissolved. The effluent gases contain less than 3 per cent of hydrogen sulphide and can be employed over again for further hydrogenation. The Provisional Specification states that the reaction may be applied to cracking processes. Specification 331,509 is referred to.
