Abstract
Hydrocarbons are refined by treatment, under a pressure of 5-100 atmos. and a temperature of over 300 DEG C., with a gas containing carbon monoxide and hydrogen in the presence of a sulphur-resistant catalyst having a basis of cobalt and/or molybdenum compounds and alumina, and of 5-50 per cent of water vapour by volume of the fresh gas entering the hydrogenation zone. The gas may be coke oven gas, coal gas, low-temperature carbonization gas, pressure gasification gas, oil refinery gas or water gas. The catalysts may be one containing cobalt oxide or sulphite, molybdic acid and alumina, or one containing aluminium oxide, molybdic acid, cobalt hydroxide and graphite. Hydrocarbon fractions referred to are gasoline, benzene, and a mixture, obtained from the gasification of gas, coal, consisting of gasoline and an oil, boiling up to 210 DEG C. The treated hydrocarbons may be washed with caustic alkali followed by washing with dilute sulphuric acid and/or treatment with bleaching earth, alumina, silica gel or activated charcoal; this treatment may be carried out in the presence of a gas containing hydrogen and/or of water vapour. Alternatively, the treated hydrocarbons may be fractionated. Refined product in the residual gas may be recovered by adsorption with activated charcoal, cooling, or washing out with washing oil. The residual gas may be recycled.
