Abstract
Petroleum feedstocks containing a catalytically cracked gas oil, are catalytically desulphurized by treating with a catalyst comprising the oxides of cobalt and molybdenum incorporated with or deposited on alumina and also containing combined fluorine, under conditions of temperature and space velocity at which autofining takes place and recycling the hydrogen-rich gas separated from the treated feedstock until equilibrium pressure is reached. The temperature may be 750-800 DEG F. and the space velocity 1-5 v/v/hr. After equilibrium pressure is reached the process may be operated as an autofining process or the pressure may be maintained by adding hydrogen from an external source. In examples the treatment of a blend of 20 per cent catalytically cracked gas oil in straight run gas oil, and a blend of light cycle oil obtained in a catalytic cracking process, kerosine and straight run naphtha, is described.
