Abstract
Petroleum hydrocarbons are hydro-catalytically desulphurized by contacting the hydrocarbons in vapour form in admixture with hydrogen with a finely divided fluid dehydrogenation-hydrogenation catalyst, at a temperature and pressure such that the dehydrogenation of naphthenes is effected to an extent not substantially in excess of that required to provide sufficient hydrogen to convert organically combined sulphur contained in the hydrocarbons into hydrogen sulphide and to maintain the necessary pressure in the reaction zone. The treated hydrocarbons are continuously removed from the reaction zone, hydrogen sulphide and a hydrogen-rich gas, which is recycled, are separated, and spent catalyst is continuously removed from the reaction zone and passed to a regeneration zone from which it is recycled to the reaction zone. The catalyst may be a mixture of oxides of cobalt and molybdenum, or chemical compounds of cobalt, molybdenum and oxygen, or mixtures of both types; cobalt molybdate or alumina is specified. The process may be carried out at a temperature of 750-800 DEG F. and at a pressure of 50-200 p.s.i. The treatment of wax distillates, gas oil, aromatic extracts and other feedstocks boiling below 350 DEG C. is described. Specification 669,551, is referred to.
