Abstract

Distillate petroleum fractions boiling above 150 DEG C. and preferably below 450 DEG C. are contacted in the presence of hydrogen with a catalyst having isomerizing and/or cracking activity at a temperature of at least 750 DEG F., but below the temperature at which substantial cracking occurs, at a pressure of at least 100 p.s.i.g. which gives a net consumption of hydrogen, and a space velocity of the liquid feedstock not exceeding 3 v/v/hr., the temperature and space velocity being correlated so that the cloud point, pour point or freezing point of the portion of the product which boils above 150 DEG C. is at least 10 DEG F. less than the corresponding point of the starting material. The conditions normally used are 800 DEG to 900 DEG F. and 100 to 1500 p.s.i.g. with a hydrogen to hydrocarbon ratio of between 5 to 1 and 20 to 1. The feedstocks may have a sulphur content in which case the process may also result in a considerable reduction in the sulphur content. The preferred catalyst contains a Group VI(a) and a Group VIII metal preferably as oxide or sulphide, particular metals used are molybdenum and cobalt. The catalyst is supported on a refractory oxide which is preferably acidic and which may be one or more oxides of metals of Groups II, III or IV. In addition the catalyst may also contain 0,1 to 6% of halogen or 1 to 25% by weight of phosphorus.
