Abstract
Catalysts consisting of alumina and 3-20% of MoO3, 1-12% of CoO and 4-20% of iron oxide based on the total weight of catalyst, the ratio MoO3/CoO being at least 1,5/1, are used for refining lubricating oils. Preferably the catalysts have an MoO3/CoO ratio of approximately 3/1, a suitable composition being MoO3= 9-10%, Fe2O3=10-12%, CoO=2-5%, the remainder being Al2O3. Preferably the Al2O3 is of the g variety. The catalysts may be activated by contact with a sulphur-containing mineral oil in the presence of hydrogen at a temperature of at least 300 DEG C. for at least 24 hours. The iron oxide content of the catalysts is as high as possible compatible with the porosity of the Al2O3. The source of alumina used in making the catalysts may be hydrargillite which has been calcined at above 500 DEG C. Examples are given. Specification 913,048 is referred to.
