Abstract

Lubricating oils are subjected to hydrocatalytic refining to obtain an oil of improved colour stability by contacting the oil at elevated temperature and pressure with a catalyst comprising the oxides of cobalt, molybdenum, and iron, on a refractory oxide support, in the presence of hydrogen and from 0.01-0.75% by weight of water vapour by weight of oil. Preferred conditions are 150-340 DEG C., 5-80 ats., 0.5-6 vols. oil/vol. catalyst/hr., hydrogen feedrate 5-150 vols./vol. oil.
