Abstract

Petroleum distillates are autofined twice, the pressure in the first autofining being below the equilibrium autofining pressure. The distillate from the first stage may either be recycled or reprocessed over fresh catalyst. The catalyst may be the oxides of cobalt and molybdenum either as such or in combined form incorporated with a metal oxide support, such as alumina, and may contain a small proportion, e.g. 0.1-6 per cent, of combined fluorine. In an example, gas oil is autofined at a temperature of 780 DEG F., a pressure of 100 p.s.i.g., a space velocity of 2 v./v./hr. and a recycle rate of 2000 SCF/B. The product is washed with caustic soda and water and then reprocessed under the same conditions over fresh catalyst.
