Abstract
Hydrocarbons are hydrocatalytically desulphurized by contacting them at a space velocity within the range of 0.5 to 10.0 v/v/hr. of the liquid feedstock and in the presence of 1,000-10,000 SCF/B of hydrogen, with a catalyst consisting essentially of the oxides of cobalt and molybdenum on a support consisting essentially of alumina, the catalyst containing a small proportion of fluorine, at a temperature of 650-850 DEG F. and a pressure of 200-1000 p.s.i. gauge so that the organically combined sulphur contained in the hydrocarbon is converted into hydrogen sulphide, and then separating the hydrogen sulphide. The catalyst is preferably that described in Specification 719,627. In an example, a Kuwait gas oil of 248-359 DEG C. boiling range containing 1-26 per cent of sulphur was treated at 780 DEG C. and a pressure of 600 p.s.i.ga. at a space velocity of 4.0 v/v/hr. and 4,000 SCF-B gas recycle to give a product containing only 0.03-0.04 per cent of sulphur.
