Abstract

1,236,341. Hydrogenation of pyrolysis gasoline. UNIVERSAL OIL PRODUCTS CO. 19 June, 1969, No. 31060/69. Heading C5E. A sulphur-containing pyrolysis gasoline 10 is treated by (a) separating at 11 into a light fraction 15 comprising C 5 hydrocarbons and a fraction 16 comprising hydrocarbons from C 6 to 204‹ C. boiling point; (b) mixing at least a portion of the stream 16 with hydrogen and a recycle stream 40; (c) contacting the mixture at 18 with a catalyst of palladium on lithiated alumina to convert dienes to olefins without substantial conversion of sulphur compounds; (d) contacting the effluent from 18 with a desulphurization catalyst at 23 to saturate olefins and to convert sulphur compounds to hydrogen sulphide; (e) mixing at least a portion of the effluent from 23 with the light fraction 15 to dilute the diene content thereof; (f) contacting the mixture from (e) at 27 with hydrogen and a catalyst of palladium on lithiated alumina to convert dienes in the mixture to olefins; (g) separating the effluent from 27 to provide a recycle hydrogen stream 21, a C 5 olefin-containing hydrocarbon fraction 37, an olefin-free aromaticrich fraction 38 and a gasoline fraction 39 comprising C 9 + hydrocarbons; and recycling at least a portion of the fraction 39 as the recycle stream 40 to dilute the diene content of the stream 16. Step (c) is suitably carried out at 93-204‹ C. and 13À6-81À5 atmospheres gauge, step (d) is suitably carried out at 316-427‹ C. using a catalyst of nickel molybdate on alumina, and step (f) is suitably carried out at 143-288‹ C.
